Chimps and the Raw Diet

by Raw Diet Team on November 10, 2010

Question: What kind of foods do our closest cousin, the Chimpanzee, eat?

Answer: Unsurprisingly, chimpanzees consume an entirely raw food diet. The famous ethnologist, Jane Goodall, gave these overall percentages when discussing their eating habits in her book, The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior

  • 59.4% Fruit
  • 21.2% Leaves
  • 5.1% Seeds
  • 4.1% Blossoms
  • 4.2% Insects
  • 1.4% Meat
  • 4.5% Other

So, the chimpanzee is largely a fruit eater, and enjoys an overall diet that is 95% composed of raw, whole, and plant-based (and it is occasionally supplemented by termites and other insects). Since human beings and chimpanzees share so many anatomical, physiological, and biochemical traits and genetically, 99% of coding DNA sequences are the same for both species, this does suggest modern people should also be enjoying a largely plant-based, whole food, raw diet as well.
